Dapper Dan and Gucci create Lux streetwear collection
Harlem bred tailor and designer Dapper Dan aka Daniel Day is a hip hop fashion icon he helped to shape hip hop's early fashion identity in the late 80's and early 90's. Dapper Dan recreated designs by high-end brands such as Gucci and Fendi into luxury streetwear pieces. Dan described his creations as "knock ups" improvements not copies unfortunately high-end brands did not see it that way. After many legal battles Dan was forced to close his world famous boutique. Dan has created custom pieces for Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather Jr and LL Cool J to name a few.
Last year Italian powerhouse Gucci featured a coat very similar to one of Dan's creations from the 80's. This resulted in a back and forth which ended in Gucci paying tribute to Dapper Dan as an inspiration for the design. As a gesture of goodwill Gucci helped Dapper Dan reopen his boutique in Harlem.
Gucci have collaborated with Dapper Dan on a luxury streetwear collection that draws inspiration from Harlem street fashion from the late 80's early 90's. The collection consists of jackets, tops and sweat suits in sleek loose fitting silourtetees. Quality luxurious fabrics are combined with loud bombastic logo heavy designs that encapsulate the spirit of Harlem.
